Kitchen stories. Women's status and the kitchen space in french cinema from 1935 to 1980
Focus Work, Lino Mercolli und Anastasia Skorik, 2022
Looking at French cinema, our work is trying to understand the relation between the status of the woman and the kitchen space. The work aims to question the role of the architecture and the objects in the films and try to reconsider the meaning of both space and user at a turning point in the feminist movement, based on the films of Chantal Akerman, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Tati, François Truffaut, or Agnès Varda.
Following the theoretical contributions of Roland Barthes, Jean Baudrillard or Bruno La¬tour, all of them bringing a new approach to understand the impli¬cation of our material and technical world within the modern so¬ciety, we paid attention to “things” and questioned topics such as the close relation that exists between objects and subjects, between physicality and language, relations of power and social constructions taking place in the kitchen.
