The Formation of the Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites (ISOS): On Switzerland’s Approach to Its Space
Doctoral Project

Prof. Dr. Laurent Stalder
Since 2016

Work on the Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites (ISOS) began in 1973. A team of young architects led by architect Sibylle Heusser-Keller was commissioned by the Swiss Confederation to compile an inventory of Switzerland’s historic sites. Over decades, an impressive inventory of Swiss settlements was created, compiling specific – and legally binding – knowledge about them.
The dissertation takes the genesis of this inventory as a starting point to explore the decades in which space became the object of federal policy. By examining various moments in the development of the ISOS – from the 1950s to the 1970s – the dissertation aims to make visible how Switzerland dealt with its space and thus laid the foundation for the way it deals with it today.
