The Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, New York 1967-1984

The Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies has influenced the architectural culture in New York and contributed to the development of new positions of architectural discourse in the USA. Beginning with an analysis of the discussions in the publications (Oppositions, Skyline, Oppositions Books) the project examines the genealogy of the Institute’s other projects, programs and products (exhibitions including catalogues, Architecture, City as Theatre and OPEN PLAN lecture series, architectural education) in order to study strategies for the control and institutionalisation of the debate. Archival research and interviews form the basis for a contribution to the cultural history of architecture in New York in the 1970s.
